Turn Down For What? Remaining True to Yourself in the Midst of 'Turn Ups' and Temptation
Here at the illustrious North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, the time has come once again for us to celebrate our history, alumni, staff and students. It is homecoming. The Greatest Homecoming on Earth, to be exact. Or G.H.O.E. for short.
In Aggieland, homecoming is the most celebrated time of the year. Current students participate in various activities throughout the week, many professors find themselves cancelling classes and graduates of the university begin to return to Greensboro, NC. Personally, I don't drink, smoke or party as do many other college students. Although it is sometimes difficult to not participate in festivities with my friends, it becomes especially hard when your campus turns into party central. How do you remain true to yourself and what you believe in when all of your friends are clubbing and drinking? How do you prevent yourself from being called "the boring friend?"
One of my favorite quotes by Ralph Waldo Emerson says this: "It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion, it is easy in solitude to live after your own; but the great man is he who, in the midst of the world, keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.”
Being a Christian college student does not mean that you have to sit in your room and read your bible every single night (Although it is great to read your bible every day). Find alternatives other than partying. Go to kickbacks or small get-togethers. but the great man is he who, in the midst of the world, keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.” It won't be easy. Temptation comes to test our faith and commitment to God. No matter what, never compromise your faith just to fit in with others. And if your friends are not sharing in your beliefs or supporting them, then maybe it's time for you to find new friends. (Read my post on friendships here)
You should never have to change for anyone. Stand up for something or you will fall for anything.
