I Gotta Find Peace of Mind-by Lauryn Hill
If you have not already, please take the time to listen to this song in its entirety.
First of all, let me say that I admire Queen Lauryn Hill so much. Her music is so much more than just some lyrics and a melody thrown on a track. They cause you to think. They inspire you and stimulate your mind.
The lyrics of this song are so meaningful. It talks about Lauryn's struggle with her spirituality. The beginning part of the song is referring to the spirit of temptation; the devil. Or her past.
" He says it's impossible, but I know it's possible
He says there's no me without him, please help me forget about him
He takes all my energy, trapped in my memory
Constantly holding me, constantly holding me
I need to tell you all, all the pain he's caused, mmmm
I need to tell I'm, I'm undone because, mmmm
He says it's impossible, but I know it's possible
He says it's impossible without him, but I know it's possible."
As many times as I had heard this song, it didn't dawn on me until today exactly what this song meant. Personally, I can relate to the lyrics. I know the feeling of trying to take a step in the right direction, but yet it seems as if everything is trying to pull you left. It's like all you want to do is find peace of mind. You just want to be happy and content with life.
If you notice, Lauryn starts off by describing a situation of being held down and confined. But the song takes a turn by describing a more positive relationship, and it is literally like a breath of fresh air.
"I trust every part of you, cuz all that I... All that you say you do
You love me despite myself, sometimes I fight myself
I just can't believe that you, would have anything to do
With someone so insecure, someone so immature
Oh you inspire me, to be the higher me
You made my desire pure, you made my desire pure"
As Christians, the basis of what we believe in is that we are nothing without Christ. All that we do is to glorify Him.
"Just tell me what to say, I can't find the words to say
Please don't be mad with me, I have no identity
All that I've known is gone, all I was building on
I don't wanna walk with you, how do I talk to you"
Sometimes as Queen's, we attempt to be so strong and we use our voices more than our ears. James 1:19 reminds us that we must be quick to listen and slow to speak. In these next lines, Lauryn is asking God to cover her mouth so that she may listen to what He has to say. And not only listen, but understand as well.
"Touch my mouth with your hands, touch my mouth with your hands
Oh I wanna understand, the meaning of your embrace"
In the remainder, Ms. Hill is encouraging the listener to free their own mind. And testifying to exactly who is her peace of mind.
"Free, free, free, free your mind
Oh, it's so possible, oh it's so possible
I'm telling you it's possible, I'm telling you it's possible
Free, free... free, free... free, free... get free now
Free, free... free, free, free, free... free, free
You're my peace of mind, that old me is left behind
You're my peace of mind, you're my peace of mind
He's my peace of mind, he's my peace of mind"
I've found my peace of mind. Have you?
