My First Month As A News Producer
After filling out hundreds of applications, going on 3 interviews, and receiving TONS of "no's," I was very blessed to receive two job offers in one week...in my field!
The journalism industry is a very competitive industry. Honestly, I was beginning to get restless. But God knows what you need and exactly when you need it.
I accepted a position at my local TV station as a News Producer. But here's a little quick background on this application process: I originally applied for a reporter position, but the news director told me that he filled that position. He then told me that he really like my resume and wanted to consider me for the news producer position instead. I had never thought about being a news producer. But since I really needed a door to open up, I agreed to be considered for this position, and ended up getting the job.
I began my journey on February 17, 2016. So far, it's been a roller coaster. Mostly filled with dips and down days. I know that everything happens for a reason and there's a lesson to be learned in every situation, but this has been hard.
Since I studied print journalism in college, I did not have any experience producing whatsoever. Aside from some simple newscasts in a class, I had no idea what I was really walking into. Granted, I had a general idea of course. But it definitely wasn't what I had thought it would be. I have had to learn so much, which doesn't bother me; l like to learn.
My news director decided to bring me on to the team as a morning news producer. This means that I would be working from 11pm at night to 8am the next morning. (Touch me Lord Jesus!)
I recently began my new schedule and the first night was absolutely horrible. Worst experience ever. But I made it through!
I'm very excited about the growth that I have made in such a short amount of time. Even though producing is not what I want to do for the rest of my life, I am excited to be in this season. I feel very privileged to have been selected to work as a morning news producer for my first job. I know that this is a great way for me to learn and grow as a journalist and as a person.
